As jovens ativistas Amanda Costa, do Instituto Perifa Sustentável, ...e Samela Sateré Mawé, do Amazônia de Pé, se unem a Bebel Abreu, do WDCD Brasil, para explorar as possibilidades de resposta a essa pergunta junto com a comunidade criativa.

De 11h às 12h do dia 19 de janeiro, iremos discutir como designers, makers e empreendedores criativos podem se inspirar respeitosamente nas estratégias ancestrais e periféricas brasileiras e como podemos trabalhar juntes para impulsionar a transição para uma sociedade circular.

Samela é indígena do povo Sateré Mawé, estudante de Biologia na Universidade do Estado do Amazonas, ativista ambiental e jovem comunicadora. Fellow pelo Instituto Arapyau, atua em diversas organizações, como a Articulação dos Povos Indígenas do Brasil, a APIB, a Articulação Nacional das Mulheres Indígenas Guerreiras da Ancestralidade e a rede “Uma concertação pela Amazônia”, que busca soluções para o desenvolvimento sustentável da floresta. Samela também é apresentadora no Canal Reload, uma das “Creator pelo clima” da plataforma NOSSAS e é uma das ativistas por trás da “Amazônia de Pé”, uma lei de iniciativa popular que destina as florestas públicas na Amazônia para proteção dos povos indígenas, quilombolas, pequenos produtores extrativistas e Unidades de Conservação.

What design can do to promote climate justice and help build a circular future for the planet?

The young activists Amanda Costa, from Perifa Sustentável Institute, and Samela Sateré Mawé, from Amazônia de Pé, will join Bebel Abreu, from WDCD Brasil, to explore the possibilities of answering this question with the creative community.

Starting from 11h AM on january 19th, we will discuss, in portuguese, how designers, makers and creative entrepreneurs can be respectfully inspired by brazilian ancestral and peripheral strategies and how we can work together to propel the transition to a circular society.

Josh Fox is an Oscar-nominated, Emmy-winning writer/director best known for Gasland, a 2010 documentary exposing the dangers of hydraulic fracturing, or “fracking”. In the years since, Josh has become internationally ...recognised as a spokesperson and leader on the issue of clean energy.

In 2017, he was awarded his third Environmental Media Association award for Best Documentary for his film How To Let Go of The World and Love All The Things Climate Can’t Change. With indigenous filmmakers Doug Good Feather and Myron Dewey, he also made the critically acclaimed feature Awake, A Dream From Standing Rock.

Due to his extensive work in environmental activism, Josh was appointed to the Democratic Platform committee in 2016 by Bernie Sanders. The work of the committee led to the passing of historic amendments that will phase out fossil fuels and set goals towards 100% renewable energy development.

In 2018, Josh created The Truth Has Changed, a solo performance, book and film about the misinformation and propaganda which manipulate our current media and political ecosystem. A true film activist, Josh is certainly a force to be reckoned with!

Eddie Opara is a multi-faceted designer who has done it all. Currently a partner at the award-winning Pentagram’s New York office, his work encompasses strategy, design and technology.

His projects reflect ...a diversely talented designer, with designs that include: brand identity, publications, packaging, environments, exhibitions, interactive installations, websites, user interfaces and software, with many of his projects ranging across multiple media. It’s no surprise Eddie has worked with the biggest of clients like Samsung, Smithsonian Design Museum and Morgan Stanley, which has led to winning numerous awards including a Gold Cube from the Art Directors Club and honours from D&AD.

Eddie’s work is in the permanent collection of the Museum of Modern Art and has appeared in publications such as Wired, Fast Company, Creative Review, Archis, Surface and Graphis.

Eddie is a senior critic at the Yale University School of Art. He has taught at the Rhode Island School of Design, the Columbia University School of Architecture and the University of the Arts, Philadelphia. He is a member of the distinguished design society, Alliance Graphique Internationale. Eddie recently authored a book, Color Works, published by Rockport. He was named one of Fast Company’s 100 Most Creative People in Business in 2012 and 2014, and was featured in Ebony Magazine’s Power 100 and Adweek’s Creative 100.

Journalist and author Zoe Mendelson teamed up with visual artist María Conejo to create Pussypedia, a thorough and empowering guide to women’s health, which started as a website and has ...now been published as a book. “I started realizing there was a lot of information that I should have always had and that I felt everyone needed to know,” said Zoe. “So what I’d been doing before was a lot of different projects that all had to do with taking complicated concepts and making them into accessible, engaging content. So I thought, ‘Okay, well, we could do this about vaginas.’” Thus, Pussypedia was born, tells Zoe Mendelson in an interview with WDCD.

Zoe Mendelson is a writer, researcher, and content strategist. She tries to help people understand and care about important things. Past projects include a data narrative about drones, a civic engagement platform for millennials, and an official emoji pack for Mexico City. Current projects include a martial arts curriculum for dogs. Her writing has appeared in the Washington Post, Los Angeles Times, WIRED, Slate, Next City, and elsewhere. Her projects have been covered by publications like The New York Times en Español, Fast Company, BuzzFeed, and Vice i-D. She has a BA from Barnard College of Columbia University in New York City.

María Conejo is a visual artist and graduate of the School of Design of the National Institute of Fine Arts in Mexico. Her main medium is drawing. Her work revolves around the body and the representation of it as a sign that communicates her existential concerns. María has been awarded twice by the Ministry of Culture FONCA with the Jovenes Creadores national grant in 2014 and 2016. She has collaborated as an illustrator with various feminist organizations and human rights defenders in Mexico and other parts of the world, to help eradicate gender violence. Her work has been published in The Washington Post, Revista de la Universidad, Revista Tierra Adentro, Revista Gatopardo, Vice, etc. Her work has been exhibited in many galleries, museums and art fairs in Latin America, U.S.A. and Europe.

She is co-founder of Pussypedia.net, a free, bilingual online encyclopedia of the pussy with which they won first place at the 10th National Biennial of Design in México in the professional category of Socially Responsible Design with Social or Participatory Content in 2019 and a Webby Award for being the best of education on the internet in 2020. Her first illustrated book Pussypedia, A Comprehensive Guide was published in August 2021 by Hachette Book Group.

Meet ‘Living Coffin’ | Bob Hendrikx

‘Are you waste, or are you compost?’ Probably not a question you’ve ...

‘Are you waste, or are you compost?’ Probably not a question you’ve answered before, but it’s a question designer Bob Hendrikx is asking of us all with his ‘living coffin’. ...Loop is the world’s first fully biodegradable casket made out of mycelium fungi. It takes only 7 days to grow and shape a complete living coffin, in a sustainable process that uses no heat or energy. Once buried, these coffins turn into compost within 6 weeks, continually feeding the soil for up to 3 years as it decomposes. This makes Loop an appealing alternative to conventional burial methods, which can actually lead to soil degradation and groundwater pollution.

“Our solution originated from thinking out of the perspective of the organism instead of the human: nature-centered design. What if we move from working with dead materials to collaborating with living organisms? The most innovative aspect of our invention is the fact that it is alive, thereby being unique within the field of biofabrication and design. With this new approach not only our parasitic relationship is restored, as humans we are also rewarded with new undiscovered characteristics, a coffin that is actually breathing, growing during the whole process and most important of all: able to remove toxins from the body and soil and allowing new life to thrive.”

By simply following the fundamentals of nature this product was invented. Mycelium is nature’s largest recycler, transforming dead organic matter and turning it into key plant food, a wonderful closed-loop system. An underground living organisms that wishes to recycle us… the Living Coffin was born. The idea has gone viral all over the world in outlets ranging from NY Post, Guardian, BBC, Dezeen to BBC news etc.. We have showed humanity that this is our opportunity to no longer accept to leave our planet and loved ones with a scar but actually enrich life after death.”
